Hillwood students get head start on nursing career
Ramirez, 18, and seven other Hillwood High School students visit Woodcrest, the health center at The Blakeford, a Green Hills senior living community, twice a week. The students are in the school’s nurse training program.
Upon graduation the group will have acquired the 40 hours of hands-on training and 60 hours of class instruction required to sit for the certified nursing assistant exam in May. If the students pass, they will have a head start on a medical career with a certification that allows them to work in a professional-paying occupation while pursuing further education.

The nurse training program is part of Hillwood’s Academy of Health Science, which was established in 2008 with the launch of Metro schools’ small learning community model. This is the first year Hillwood is offering a class that prepares seniors for the certified nursing assistantexam
